Additional Profiles hero with two Facebook profile phone screens

Context

Facebook was built on a "one person, one profile" paradigm, but people's lives are more layered than that. Research showed users were creating unauthorized duplicate accounts, disengaging from participation, and avoiding authentic expression out of fear of judgment across mixed audiences.

The question became: How might we give users control over how they show up in different contexts, without undermining the trust and integrity of the Facebook ecosystem?

The problem

Users wanted different identity spaces for communities, interests, and audiences, but Facebook was built around one primary profile. Without a clear sanctioned model, users had to improvise with separate accounts, inconsistent privacy expectations, or unclear audience boundaries.

01

Identity clarity

Users needed to understand what a new profile was, and what stayed tied to their main account.

02

Safe switching

Switching had to be visible and predictable so users always knew which profile they were using.

03

Scalable patterns

The system needed patterns that could extend across surfaces without adding visual noise.

The solution

Additional Profiles, let users create up to four profiles alongside their main Facebook account, each with its own name, social graph, and feed, while keeping everything tied to one account for safety.

My role

Led design from discovery through scaled launch, partnering with UXR, PM, engineering, privacy, and integrity.

Designed the end-to-end experience: creation, onboarding, profile switching, and user education. Facilitated alignment on privacy boundaries and multi-profile mental models across stakeholders.

As the product scaled, stayed close to engineering through phased rollout, refined the experience at launch, and helped extend our design patterns into other parts of the product.

What I designed

1 Creation flow: reduce friction while building trust

The core design challenge was helping users understand what an additional profile is, what changes when they switch profiles, and what to expect from separation and safety, without making the experience feel heavy. The goal was an experience that felt approachable while reinforcing that this was a meaningful identity decision, not just a settings toggle.

2 Onboarding: solve the cold-start problem

A brand new profile starts with an empty graph and limited content, so early onboarding had to work hard. Led the design of flows that helped users set up their presence quickly, connect to relevant users and communities, and reach a feed that felt worth coming back to.

Early engagement proved to be a strong indicator of whether a profile would evolve into a persistent, active identity. Subsequent analysis reinforced this insight, identifying Groups as a meaningful use case and underscoring the value of community-oriented onboarding paths.

3 Switching: make identity clarity the default

Switching is the core mechanic, so legibility was non-negotiable. The work focused on preventing "wrong voice" mistakes, making the active profile unmistakable at key decision moments, and maintaining consistency across every entry point.

4 Design patterns: scale safely through consistency

Because Additional Profiles touched many surfaces, we focused on creating reusable patterns over one-off UI. Switching affordances, identity cues, onboarding modules, and disclosure structures were built to scale.

This reduced fragmentation and made it easier for partner teams to build compatible experiences without reinventing the safety model from scratch.

Impact

Additional Profiles shipped globally on September 7, 2023, becoming Facebook's path for identity separation. The product followed a phased, metrics-driven rollout over two years before reaching full global scale.

Personal takeways

This was a multi-year, foundational shift for Facebook, requiring constant balance between user freedom and platform safety, simplicity and regulatory compliance, growth, and ecosystem health.

A few things that stuck with me: the best problem framing came from deeply understanding identity expression barriers, not from the feature brief. When it came to retention, nothing moved the needle like helping users build a real social graph around their new identity. Trust was earned through transparency. Clearly communicating what was and wasn't shared between profiles helped users feel safe enough to adopt and use it.
